Well, you should, if you haven't yet. Why, you might ask? Simple. It's because happy is your birthright.
Unhappy is unnatural, and you should move away from it as soon as possible, if that's what you're feeling.
Be as sceptical as you want, either from experience or what others have always taught you about life and what to expect, but I'm telling you that "happy" is what you were meant to be. Stop refusing to even feel, for one moment, that you are actually meant, destined even, to be happy. Allow a change to occur in your emotional state. Let it happen, and it's so easy to do it.
The small exercise I recommended earlier, that you just say to yourself, every time you are feeling low, or angry, or resentful, or without hope, that you're happy and today's a great day will start to shift your emotions. It really will.
Keep doing that every time you catch yourself thinking about anything that's negative in your life, and before long, you'll notice a shift, however slight. And if you keep practicing the replacement of the thoughts about whatever's bothering you with that simple statement, it will shift your emotions more and more. And before long, you'll actually feel happier, even if, at first, it only lasts a short time.
The more you focus on things that move you away from the negative feelings, the more you will form a habit of feeling better. It will be a mind habit, and it will become as much a part of you as all the negative thinking is now. It's just a mater of focusing your mind on something besides your troubles. And it works.
Once you start to feel better more of the time, you can begin to take steps that are necessary to make your life a whole lot better. You can't even envision better things if you're too upset, depressed, or anxious to think about them, but you can if you're in a more uplifted mood. Ideas that will help you solve problems will come to you, new avenues will open to you, you'll meet people who will also show you the way to improve things. Once you start telling yourself, until you believe it, that this is a great day, no matter what's going on outside you, it will happen.

NEXT STEP
Ok, now we're avoiding the negative people in our lives as much as possible, and figuring out what we can do to change any situation that isn't creating anything positive in our lives, whether it's a job, relationship, or whatever, so it's time to do even more to create the life we were meant to be living. Meaning a life that is filled with a lot more joy than negativity.
Perhaps what works for me will work for you, so here's what I do. Whenever I feel down, (and the important thing is to always pay attention to what you're feeling because that's the real guide to what's going on in our lives), I've begun a habit that works to pull me out of it in a very short time. No kidding, it works, and it's as simple as 1,2,3. I just start telling myself, over and over again, for a short time, that "it's a great day, and I'm happy".
I will testify to that, to anyone, anywhere, anytime. It works. Somehow, just keeping that thought in my head for a minute or so, sometimes even a shorter time, lifts my mood.
It's as if I'm commanding myself to feel better than I did just a minute ago, and it is really effective.
Maybe it's just a matter of thinking about something else for a while, and my attention shifts from the thoughts that were depressing or upsetting, I don't know, but it is a very effective way to bring your mood up, and make the day a lot happier.
Don't forget, worrying about things, or focusing on upsetting things never changes them, it just upsets you. So, leaving those thoughts behind and starting a whole new thinking process will help your mood, and that means, help you.
Try it. You've got nothing to lose, and a lot of better days to gain.

A SIMPLE WAY TO MAKE LIFE EASIER
It isn't too hard to start making your life easier, really. The important thing is to always, always remember that how you respond to things sets an emotional tone for yourself, regardles of what's happening. Simply put, it isn't what happens to us in life that's important, it's how we respond to it.
For instance, if my car breaks down while I'm trying get to an important meeting, I do have a choice as to how I react to it. I can fume and curse and yell and cry, or I can tell myself to remain calm, call AAA, if I have it, or call anyone I know who will come to my asistance, or call a tow truck company to take that little peace of unreliable junk to the repair shop. But Idon't have to let it ruin my whole day, and I sure don't have to keep thinking about it for days to come. The trick here is to control my emotions, and by doing that I control my mood, and my attitude for the day.
Practice this, it comes a lot more easily than you might think, the next time something happens that's upsetting or frustrating. Don't let it make your whole day unhappy. Do the best you can to handle it, keep your emotions steady, and you'll be very surprised at the result. At least, you'll be surprised if you've reacted in a very negative way to these little stumbling blocks in life previously.
It makes all the difference in the world, and improves our lives immensely if we just don't allow ourselves to be upset about minor events. Or even big events. But start with the minor ones, and prove to yourself that you can choose how your day is going, by choosing your emotional reactions to things that happen.
You'll like this change.

DON'T WASTE ANOTHER DAY
Since we only have so many days to live, no matter how many or few, the only sensible thing to do is NOT to waste even one of them being unhappy. If you do, you've thrown away the chance to enjoy that day. That's right, YOU'VE thrown it away, nobody else did, only you.
If you've stayed in a situation that you know is wrong for you, because it doesn't give you any joy, then you've chosen to live one more day in unnhappiness. My suggestion to you, then, is to start right here, right now, to change any part of your life that isn't giving you that joy you were intended to experience in life.
Small changes are what I believe you should go for,at first, because a large, mega change would be troubling for most people, and scare them away from any more changes. So, what about letting anyone in your life who is constantly negative know that you don't want to hear that anymore? Just tell them that, you don't have to explain it or justify it, just tell them. That should be a possible step for you. And it will change the atmosphere around you, even if that person only reduces their negative comments somewhat, or if they only do it for a while.(It's so much a part of their sad little life that they will probably slip right back into their negativity)
Pay close atention to the change in the atmosphere around you when it does change, and your mood, even if it has changed ever so slightly. An improvement, don't you think?
Then, it's your choice as to what you want to do to make that positive change last a little longer. Get away from that person if you can, and if you can't, practice tuning them out, little by litte. What they say can only affect you if you let it, so practice not letting it bring you down, or to doubt yourself. It might take a while, especially if they've controlled you with all that negativity for a long time, but keep at it, and it's power will diminish. It has to, because now you're taking charge of your emotional life, not someone on the outside.
Keep reminding yourself that their opinion of you or anything you're doing is just that, their silly (some might say stupid) opinion, not anything you have to pay attention to, or take seriously. And you'll start to feel a lot better.
You'll love it, really. Give it a try.

YOUR NATURAL STATE IS HAPPY !!
So if you're not, happy that is, then you know something's really wrong with the path you're on right now. That's your measure of whether you're doing what you're supposed to be doing in life: whether you're happy or not.
In your daily going about your business, keep checking with your feelings about whether you feel any sort of joy, in whatever you're doing. I'll tell you right now that if you don't feel any joy during a whole day, you're overdue for a change in whatever you're living, wherever you're living, whomever you're sharing your life with, whether it's children, a life partner, friends, it doesn't matter who it's with, what matters is whether you feel good about your life, day to day.

LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ENJOYABLE
Thar's right, life is supposed to be enjoyed, and if anybody else tells you differently, they're wrong. We were not put on this earth to be miserable. So, if you're finding it hard, that means you're on the wrong path, involved with the wrong people, at the wrong job, or even living in the wrong city.
I've found that if you're on the right path, or something close to it, life flows, it isn't stuck in a place of unhappiness, or constant struggle. Really. That's how it works. Let your feelings be your guide. They're our compass as we move thru life. The GPS of our souls. Listen to them, take the guidance. If your feelings are telling you that you're not on the wrong path, change it.
It may be slow and steady, rather than immediate, but start to change the things in your life that give you the most unhappiness, RIGHT NOW. Don't start the change tomorrow or in an hour or so, start the changes now. Slightly, rather than in a large way is probably better, because you don't want to cause chaos in your life. But move toward changing them, starting right now.
Your life will start to be the joy it was meant to be. Oh yeah.
